Compliance: Transportation of Dangerous Goods

What is the regulation governing the transportation of dangerous goods and the requirement for an ELD?

1- Determine if placarding is required?

It is important to first determine if placarding indicating the risk and type of dangerous goods is required. This is determined based on the type of dangerous goods, quantity, containers, and the vehicle transporting them.

You can find all the information in the guide on the transportation of dangerous goods.

2- ELD Regulation

According to regulations regarding Hours of Service and Rest;

VEHICLES COVERED

  • A motor vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 4,500 kg or more:
    • Truck
    • Tractor-trailer
    • Equipment transport vehicle, for example, a crane mounted on a truck chassis
  • A combination of motor vehicles where at least one vehicle has a gross vehicle weight rating of 4,500 kg or more
  • A tow truck
  • A vehicle transporting dangerous goods requiring the affixing of hazard placards
Thus, any vehicle, regardless of the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR), requiring the affixing of hazard placards must be equipped with an ELD.
