Compliance: Hours of Service Exemption, How Does It Work?

Do you have an exemption permit for Hours of Service? This exemption is for you. Here's how it works.

Please note, when this feature is active, hours of service and driving are not logged. It's important to note that this exemption must be activated in the driver's profile so that they can use it when the exemption permit applies and they are not required to log their activities.

To do this, you need to go to the driver's profile:

  1. People
  2. Users
  3. Select the driver
  4. HOS Settings
  5. Enable "HOS Exempt allowed"

Once the exemption is active, the driver will be able to apply it in their activity report (AR or Logbook).

To learn how to activate the exemption in Geotab Drive, refer to our article: Geotab Drive: How to Activate Authorized HOS Exemption?

In MyGeotab, the hours worked by the driver will be visible in their activity report (logbook) as "OFF" hashed out just like the personal use exemption.

You will be able to see the mileage and duration.

The Hours of Service exemption, unlike the personal use exemption, is not managed by the truck's ignition. Thus, the driver does not have to reactivate the exemption every time they turn off the engine of their vehicle. There is also no distance limit for this exemption.

The hours worked by the driver when the exemption is activated are not counted in their workday since they are exempt from Driving Hours at that time. Thus, the driver will not be in violation in their Geotab Drive application, and their working hours will not be affected if they need to calculate their Driving Hours for a trip.
